Series Review: The Storm Runner by J. C. Cervantes

Number of Books: 3

    Book #1: The Storm Runner

Zane Obispo lives a pretty great life, aside from the fact that he needs a cane to walk: he's home schooled, he has a dog he loves, and he has friendly neighbors. But just when he thinks he has things figured out, his mom tells him he has to go back to public school. That's where he meets Brooks, a mysterious girl who tells him he plays a part in an ancient Maya prophecy.

The Storm Runner trilogy is very fast-paced, more so than almost any series I've ever read. J. C. Cervantes wastes no time getting to the action, and since she manages to fit so many scenes in one book, it can sometimes be a little hard to keep up, though this is easily solved by taking a moment every few chapters to make sure you understand what's happening. That aside, reading this series is a great way to learn more about ancient Maya culture and mythology, which is definitely a plus. Zane makes a great narrator, and the main side characters were all lovable with the exception of Brooks, who just didn't click with me. Good read; seven point five out of ten stars.

Read-alikes include the Aru Shah series and the Keeper of the Lost Cities series.
